Section II: Food Concept & Survey Results
Description of Food Product Idea
After a preliminary analysis of our target customer, we decided to develop our product around the young, active, and adventurous market niche. With that in mind, we wanted our product to focus on convenience, nutrition, and affordability. To meet the needs of our target market, we chose to develop a portable and nutritious snack in which our customers could eat in the car, at school, or during an extracurricular activity. Our vision for creating this product is to bring whole food nutrition into the lives of kids and adults. The food market is inundated with highly processed foods containing ingredients we can’t even pronounce. We believe that you should know what you’re putting in your body. For that reason, our bar is made of simple ingredients you can find in your local market or your pantry. More importantly, they’re ingredients you can pronounce. Our bars will be made from four simple ingredients: bananas, blueberries, dates, and hemp seeds. Bananas for energy, blueberries for antioxidants, dates for bind, and hemp seeds for texture. No added sugars, no artificial coloring or flavors, no dairy, and no gluten. You may be wondering about the name Ruckus. Why Ruckus? We decided to name our energy bar The Ruckus Energy Bar for multiple reasons. One reason is that the word ruckus means commotion. Since our customers are very active and live hectic lives, we thought this would be a fitting name. Another definition of the word ruckus is a disturbance, and our mission is to disturb the unhealthy snack market by bringing in a new nutritious snack that children, teens, and adults will love. Finally, Ruckus is also the name of a mountain biking team in our local community, and we wanted to honor and support our community. Go Ruckus!
Survey Results
In the interest of understanding the needs and wants of our customers and how we can better develop our energy bar, a survey was sent out to students at a local charter school. Seventy four students received the survey. Sixty four students returned the survey. The survey asked ten questions that focused on the type of ingredients and flavors best suited for a new energy bar.
